I have had many requests from people wanting to load MP3's on protected network phones like Vodafone to use them as ringtones. This is usually the Sony-Ericson phones i700, V800 etc. The problem with these phones (or protected networks) are that they accept DRM-MP3's only as MP3 realtones. DRM is short for 'Digital Rights Management'.

Actually I think it's a good thing to prevent a level of piracy, but they shouldn't have prevented customers from loading any of their own MP3's on their own phones as ringtones. Suddenly you can just load DRM-MP3's, and only Vodafone Live supplies them at a premium of course (3 British Pounds!).

First of all you should load updated firmware (this is stricly not recommended if you don't know what you're doing). That might get rid of some of the branding on the phone itself.

Further you'll need software like Nokia Mobile Internet Toolkit to package your MP3's with the right lock options enabled. It seems to differ from phone to phone, but I've seen forward lock and combined delivery lock used (seperately for i700 and V800). It's real easy. After that just upload the MP3 to your phone and voilais. Custom MP3 ringtones for your Sony-Ericson.
